I’m queuing up my question now, but please answer when it is convenient. In browsing prior recordings about the bridge program, I have not been able to determine whether the program could be done via remote learning (even as the university is open). Is this available? Thank you.

32:22
Outside of Covid, most of our courses are not typically offered with remote options.

32:50
How much is the tuition for the bridge program?

33:56
If we start the bridge program in Fall ’21, rather than summer, does that impact the timing for folding into the regular MS program?

34:38
When is the application deadline for the Fall 21 bridge program?

34:50
Hi, I am an OPT student, how will this effect my visa status?

35:28
When will applications be reviewed and admission decisions be made? Will it only be after the priority deadline?

35:33
Is it possible to apply to two programs at Columbia at the same time? I am also interested in a program at Columbia GSAPP

35:41
Hey @Holly, we have been taking classes remotely since this summer. Remote vs. in-person depends on the course/professor. All the classes that I have taken so far since this summer are remote. :)

35:57
How does financial aid work? Are there scholarships available? New to this, so pardon if this question sounds weird.

36:17
Are there scholarships/grants for students from low income families?

36:26
@Lawrence. Thank you

37:40
Is there a preference between Professional/Academic LOR?

38:21
Can you study programs outside of cs?

41:39
I haven't been in school in a while and currently working full time. Can this program (bridge and masters) be done on part-time basis?

41:41
Must the bridge courses be completed before admission?

41:43
What is the maximum number of courses you can take per semester?

42:02
What abilities and experience are most valued in admission?

42:49
If the FAQ it says if students do not submit GRE scores this cycle they will not be penalized in the graduate admissions review process. If a GRE score is submitted, how heavily would the score be weighted as part of the graduate admissions review process?

44:47
@Sonam - it really depends on your workload and how much flexibility you have from your employer. I do have to say that the course work is pretty rigorous so plan accordingly ;). I decided to leave my job and go full time because I wanted to get the most out of the program as a full time student :)

44:52
Is there an average undergrad gpa that the program usually expects?

44:54
I noticed that there are other versions of the intro courses offered at Columbia (courses that are not taught in java or honors/advanced courses). Would these classes fulfill the bridge requirement?

45:25
@Lesly - Bridge courses must be completed before moving onto the MS program

45:28
Can you talk about the main difference between graduate and undergraduate CS coursework?

45:52
Can I just try 3 credits from the bridge program?

46:22
@Soofie we occasionally accept course substitutes but we wouldn't recommend you to take alternative courses without consulting us first.

46:36
@Nalin: MS coursework is naturally more rigorous and more specialized.

47:01
How many calculus classes must I take?

47:15
Calculus I II and III?

47:39
There's an honors course in data structures that looks good if you're feeling strong

47:54
Yes the honors data structures would be fine.

47:57
take

48:46
I’ve taken both an intro and data structures course at my undergraduate university, but due to some difference in material/language of instruction, I’m planning on retaking one or both of the classes. Is this something I should mention on my application. If so, where would be an appropriate place to mention this?

49:30
Thank you!

49:48
Does coursera count

50:04
If I take a online or do a project

50:17
If I do a project on my own does it count?

50:18
I’m curious about current student’s previous backgrounds

52:03
Have any of the current students have worked part time during the bridge program?

52:18
I work all day every day

52:42
Are Bridge students eligible to be teaching assistants, participate in research, or be resident advisors? Thanks again for taking these questions.

53:01
Also, about how many students are in the program in total?

53:36
This class has 20 students I think

53:58
You mentioned a threshold, is there a general class size that the admissions have in mind?

53:59
How common is it for students to have no background at all in computer science? Do those students tend to struggle a lot more?

54:01
there's 25 students for this cohort, with expectation of the same

55:16
I have a non-CS Bachelors and a non-CS MS, how much weight will be given to the BS vs. MS in the application process?

55:42
What where Michael’s careers

56:12
@Dana we will likely look at both, perhaps weighting more recent records a bit higher

56:14
Fixed Income trading and real estate development

56:25
Thanks!

59:51
I have to go bye

59:54
To Lawrence: Hi thanks for your time! I’m wondering whether you had any background in CS already (aside from your consulting career) and what you plan to study after the bridge program? I wonder if the track you choose is heavily math-based? Thank you.

01:00:58
I also have a background in accounting and finance

01:02:20
Any tips for these kinds of loan for us who don’t have experience with loans?

01:02:25
Thank you in advance.

01:04:07
Are class sizes integrated with undergraduate students or is there a specific cohort of classes for bridge/MS students only?

01:04:19
Are there any students in the bridge program who studied the Humanities in undergrad?

01:04:26
@Neel yes there are!

01:04:38
Can bridge applicants receive financial aid? Should I send my FAFSA to Columbia?

01:04:48
everything is integrated, there is no separate sections. we are all receiving the same education

01:05:03
@Matthew: Yes as in they are integrated with undergraduates?

01:05:55
the bridge program courses are, as for grad courses there are probably going to be some undergrads as well.

01:06:15
until you get to the really tail end of the program

01:06:19
Thank you!

01:07:06
For any students that want to respond: I find that studying for CS in groups is extremely helpful and was wondering if you’ve been able to interact with other students online despite not taking classes on campus.

01:07:07
What does the acceptance rate look like?

01:07:11
I came to the session late, so apologies if I missed this information, but is the bridge program essentially the equivalent of a sped-up undergrad degree in CS?

01:07:16
Can students from SPS take bridge programs as electives?

01:07:34
How would you be able to find work in a downturn economy?

01:08:14
Javascript is the main language

01:08:18
Right?

01:08:33
@Michael most of our students that have been looking for work have been able to find opportunities. CS talent is needed in every industry!

01:08:57
Web design is there too

01:08:58
?

01:09:01
as well as hopefully by the time you would be graduating then the economy will be on the up and up

01:09:06
Like web development?

01:11:16
@Nana et al. what are your career plans?

01:11:33
thank you, all!

01:12:33
I want to build advanced computers with new paradigms based on things that go beyond even quantum computing standards

01:13:45
lol

01:13:50
How competitive vs collaborative has the student environment been ?

01:14:11
I very unrealistic

01:14:57
I've found it to be a supportive envirnment

01:15:18
couldn’t agree more @michael

01:15:23
awesome, thank you!

01:15:55
lol

01:16:08
Im joking

01:17:54
During non covid times, is the MS component usually in person?

01:18:39
@Nalin, yes generally this is an in-person program

01:18:43
both the bridge and the MS

01:19:06
Thank you all so much!

01:19:08
Thank you!

01:19:09
