Columbia at Home Series: Documenting Women: A Conversation with Betsy West and Julie Cohen
Academy Award-nominated directors and producers Betsy West and Julie Cohen ’89JRN specialize in narrative documentary films about history-making trailblazers. They will join Columbia at Home to discuss their films, including the two most recent: JULIA, examining the life of cook Julia Child, and MY NAME IS PAULI MURRAY, profiling activist Pauli Murray. West and Cohen will also share insights on the making of RBG, their 2018 Oscar-nominated film about Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The session will be moderated by Alece Oxendine '11SOA, Director, Industry & Festival Outreach, Columbia University School of the Arts.

Betsy West
Betsy West is the Academy Award®-nominated, director/producer of RBG (Magnolia, CNN Films, 2018), along with Julie Cohen. Most recently, she and Cohen directed JULIA (Sony Pictures Classics, 2021) and My Name is Pauli Murray (Participant/Amazon Studios, 2021.) Betsy was executive producer of the MAKERS PBS/AOL series about the modern women’s movement, and the feature documentary The Lavender Scare (PBS, 2019). As an ABC News producer and executive producer of the documentary series Turning Point, she won 21 Emmy awards. A graduate of Brown University, Betsy is the Fred W. Friendly Professor Emerita at Columbia Journalism School.
Julie Cohen '89JRN
Julie Cohen is the Academy Award® nominated director and producer of RBG (Magnolia, CNN Films, 2018) along with Betsy West. Other films she's directed with West include JULIA (Sony Pictures Classics, 2021) and My Name is Pauli Murray (Amazon Studios, 2021). Previous films she’s directed include The Sturgeon Queens, American Veteran, and I Live to Sing. Before she started making documentaries, Julie was a producer for Dateline NBC. Julie holds a bachelor's from Colgate and master's degrees from Yale Law School and Columbia Journalism School, where she has also served as an adjunct in the Documentary Program.
