Navigating Common Challenges in PE & CPT: Clinical Considerations & Practical Applications for Grief Treatments
Although Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) are considered first-line evidence-based treatments for PTSD and form the underpinnings of PGDT, research indicates an underutilization of these protocols in routine clinical practice. The goal of this presentation is to improve therapists’ self-efficacy when providing these trauma-focused therapies by enhancing their ability to recognize and respond to various clinical challenges. Perceived barriers to selecting and progressing these treatments will be reviewed.
Implementation challenges common across both protocols as well as unique to each treatment will be highlighted. Practical strategies for addressing these issues in the context of maintaining treatment fidelity will be discussed. Key resources to support the delivery of PE and CPT when working with individuals with PTSD will be included.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify key concerns that may serve as barriers to therapists initiating or sustaining these trauma-focused treatment protocols
2. Examine common challenges therapists may experience when implementing various components of PE and CPT
3. Describe clinical strategies for addressing challenges and tailoring treatment to meet a client’s individual needs
